I love coming up with copycats for my favourite recipes (we make this Chai Frappucino all the time!).
I like the challenge of making them with healthier ingredients, without so much sugar (a little may be needed but I try to make it with fewer grams of sugar) and that tastes better than the original!
It's a tall task. And not one that I take lightly.
And in the case of this favourite white tea guava lemonade recipe, one that I put a lot of thought and time into.
From driving several blocks to pick up my favourite white tea to squeezing so many lemons for trial batches, just to get the lemonade flavours right, you can rest assured that this recipe has been well tested!
So next time you are looking for a refreshing beverage, I encourage you to give this fruity iced tea a try!
The Ingredients
- White Tea- If you can't find white tea, green tea will work as well.
- Guava Juice (AKA Guava Nectar)
- Lemon Juice- Freshly squeezed is best but bottled will work in a pinch.
- Honey- Sugar, agave, maple syrup or Honey Simple Syrup can be used instead. Adjust the amount that you add to your tastes- I personally find the drink to be sweet enough without adding any sweetener.
- Hot Water and Ice
The Method
1. Brew tea. Dissolve the honey (if using) in ½ cup of boiling water and add the tea bag. Steep for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, fill with ice cubes to bring the water level up to 1 cup and continue to steep for 10 additional minutes, until the ice cubes are mostly melted. Discard the tea bag.
*If you would like an extra strong tea flavour, you can use two white tea bags instead of one.
2. Mix. Add the brewed tea, guava juice and lemon juice to a pitcher or large bowl and stir to combine.
3. Enjoy! Pour into a glass filled with ice and serve.
Leftovers
Make Ahead: The white tea can be made up to one day in advance and stored in the refrigerator.
To Store: Store leftovers in a covered jar or pitcher in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Make it Your Own
Use my recipe as a starting point and get creative. Use a blend of juices, switch up the teas, add coconut milk- whatever you want. The most important thing is that you find it delicious!
- Frozen Guava White Tea Lemonade- Prepare the white tea one day in advance and freeze in ice cube trays. When ready to serve, blend the ice cubes with the guava and lemon juices.
- Guava Iced Tea Limeade- Replace the lemon with lime juice.
- Substitute a Different Type of Tea- If you don't like white tea or can't find it, green tea or black tea will also work! They have slightly different tastes but overall it probably won't be very noticeable (and Starbucks no longer uses white tea in their drinks either).
- Use Another Juice- Orange, pineapple, mango or a combination would all be tasty in place of the guava juice.
- Add Coconut Milk- Stir in ¼-1/2 cup coconut milk to taste.
Serving Ideas
Enjoy this drink all on its own or serve it as a refreshment with your summer dinner! It would be delicious with:
- Simple Homemade Barbecued Beef Burgers
- Mixed Berry Spinach Salad
- Santa Fe Salad
*One batch of this recipe makes enough for 2 "Tall" lemonades (12 oz each) or one "Venti" (24 oz).
